Duo arrested for obtaining property under false pretense

Cherokee County NCThe following news release has been issued by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.  All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On November 26th, 2013, Joseph Michael Crist, age 27, Homeless, was arrested and charged with Obtaining Property under False Pretense and on November 25th, 2013, Brandon Case Summerlin, age 20, of 11295 Hwy 64 West, Murphy, North Carolina, was also arrested for Obtaining Property Under False Pretense; both arrests stemmed from the same incident.

On October 27th, 2013, Crist and Summerlin sold jewelry to a Murphy retailer for a total of $470.00, under the ruse that the jewelry belonged to Summerlin, when in fact it was stolen jewelry.

An investigation had begun on October 14th, 2013, when a relative of Crist, surrendered some jewelry they had found in their home where Crist had been a guest. Included in this jewelry were two class rings, a Murphy High School 1962 Class Ring, and a Tri-County Community College 1974 Class Ring. Using this jewelry, the items were traced to their owner in Maggie Valley, NC.  The owner, when contacted, was not even aware that her jewelry had been stolen. According to the owner, Crist had been a guest in her home in order that he could visit a family member in that home. After meeting with the jewelry owner, a visit to a local pawn shop by the jewelry owner and a Cherokee County Investigator, revealed two pieces of her jewelry on sale and through the cooperation of the pawn shop owner, provided documents to show the sale by Summerlin and Crist on October 27th.

Summerlin has been released on a $3,000 unsecured bond, while Crist is held on a $5,000 bond on the Cherokee County charge, and Haywood County Sheriff’s Office additionally charged Crist with Felony larceny and has a $10,000 bond on that charge. Crist is presently serving a 90 day probation violation sentence.
