(WLOS-TV) — The mother of the Tuscola High School student now facing charges for threatening a Columbine-style attack at his school is speaking out.
16-year-old Jonathan Matthew Tingle is charged with making a false report of mass violence. Fellow students tipped off authorities and they showed up in force last Friday. Tingle was taken into custody.
His mother says his disability played a large part in his actions. Mary Brown says, “He’s gone through a lot since birth and he is a special needs child. And a lot of times he doesn’t understand things when he does it.” She adds because of his disability he’s been bullied a lot and likely acted out with this threat. She says her son has been getting counseling.
He remains in custody in North Carolina, but not in Haywood County. School leaders say under state law, they can’t comment on Tingle’s individual case, but they say protocol worked well in this incident.
