The following press release has been issued by Town of Murphy Police Department. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Time of Incident: 4:40 am
Agencies Involved: Murphy Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County 911 Dispatch, Cherokee County Magistrate’s Office, Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, Cherokee County Department of Social Services, Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, Graham County Sheriff’s Office
At or around 4:40 am, on July 14th, 2014, Patrol Officer Clint E. Wooten was dispatched to 17 Ferguson Street in Murphy, due to a 9 year old girl locking herself in the bathroom and calling the Cherokee County 911 Dispatch Center.
After Patrol Officer Wooten spoke with the child regarding the problem, he requested the assistance of Deputy Tim Howe. Given the information that the girl provided to Patrol Officer Wooten, the Cherokee County Department of Social Services was contacted to come and get the child, given that the mother lived in a different state.
Assistant Chief Dustin D. Smith was able to obtain warrants for arrest for Mr. Johnson on August 5th, after he was able to complete his investigation.
Mr. Johnson was taken into custody early this morning by the Graham County Sheriff’s Office without incident. Mr. Johnson has dual residencies in Cherokee and Graham Counties.
Mr. Johnson’s Charges are as follows:
Indecent Liberties With Child
Int. Child Abuse – Serious Bodily Injury
Mr. Johnson’s bond is currently set at $100,000.00 secure. He has an initial court date of August 19th, 2014, at 09:00 am.
Chief Jacobs comments, “Anytime you are investigating a sensitive case such as this, multiple agencies are involved and are dependent on each other’s reports and information. We strive to assist the victim’s family in bringing a quick resolution to their case. We would like to thank the above listed agencies for their assistance in this matter. We would kindly ask for you to keep the victim’s family in mind during this investigation.”
Due to the pending nature and charges of this investigation, this is all of the information that can be released at this time. The victim’s name and address are being withheld for their protection. The victim and her family currently reside outside of North Carolina.
