At approximately 7:45 p.m. this evening, a rockslide occurred on Interstate 40 West at Mile Marker 7 in Haywood County near the Tennessee border. One lane of I-40 West (the right lane) is currently closed at the site of the slide.
Engineers from the N.C. Department of Transportation, including geotechnical engineers, are currently on the scene assessing the slide to determine how it can be cleared and when the road can be reopened. Crews are on the scene putting up traffic control devices to close the lane and warn motorists.
More information will be released as NCDOT engineers determine a cleanup schedule.
