Traffic stop leads to meth/stolen vehicle charges

The following press release has been issued by Town of Murphy Police Department.  All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Murphy, NC – At 1:48 pm, on December 11th, 2013, Murphy Police Department Patrol Officer Sky M. Beaver initiated a motor vehicle stop in the PVA of Taco Bell on Hwy. 19/74  in Murphy.

The driver of the vehicle, Mr. Donald Jason Trew, fled on foot from the scene at the time of the of the motor vehicle stop, while the passenger of the motor vehicle, Mr. Coy Mervin Shumate, remained in the motor vehicle.

Mr. Trew was apprehended moments later by an assisting agency. Upon searching the motor vehicle, a 2008 Kia Optima, which was stolen from a gas station in Athens, TN., on August 31st, 2013, multiple items were found that are used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Mr. Trew (Driver) was charged with the following offenses:

Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine – 1 count.
Fictitious Registration Plate – 1 count.
Maintain Place Controlled Substance – 1 count.
Possess/Distribute Meth Precursor – 2 counts.
Possess Stolen Automobile – 1 count.
Resisting Public Officer – 1 count.

Mr. Trew is being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $30,000.00 secured bond.

Mr. Shumate (Passenger) was charged with the following offenses:

Manufacture Methamphetamine – 1 count.
Possess/Distribute Meth Precursor – 1 count.
Possess Methamphetamine – 1 count.
Possess Stolen Automobile – 1 count.

Mr. Shumate is being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $20,000.00 secured bond.

Mr. Trew is from Madisonville, TN., and Mr. Shumate is from Athens, TN.

There were two dogs in the motor vehicle that had to be transported to the Valley River Humane Society by Town of Murphy Maintenance Personnel.

The stolen motor vehicle was towed from the scene by Rich’s Wrecker Service.

Both Mr. Trew and Mr. Shumate have an initial Cherokee County Court date on December 17th, 2013.
