Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 8th, 2017 arrest of 39 year old Issac Daniel Hughes, of Murphy, North Carolina for violations of the controlled substances laws of North Carolina. During the morning hours of June 8th, 2017, drug investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received information that Hughes was riding around in Cherokee County and was in possession of two stolen weapons. As the day progressed, the investigators located the vehicle that Hughes was occupying. A stop of the vehicle was made and in a search incident to arrest, a large quantity of methamphetamine was found in the vehicle. Hughes was arrested and brought to the Cherokee County Detention Center where the magistrate set a $100,000.00 secure bond for TRAFFICKING IN METHAMPHETAMINE, POSS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE INJURY TO REAL PROPERTY. Hughes has a June 27th, 2017 District Court date. Sheriff Palmer remarked, “We continue our aggressive efforts to control the drug trafficking in Cherokee County. Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 8th, 2017 arrest of 23 year old Evelyn Elizabeth Gausepohl, of Marble, North Carolina, for selling stolen goods and for violations of the controlled substances laws of North Carolina. On June 8th, 2017, officers with the Murphy Police Department provided information to detectives with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office that Gausepohl had been posting to a social media site and apparently selling air conditioners which had been stolen from Walmart. In a search of the residence, an air conditioner, a firearm and several items of narcotic paraphernalia were seized. Gausepohl is charged with misdemeanor larceny and was released on a $2,000.00 unsecure bond. Gausepohl is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court on June 27th, 2017. Sheriff Palmer remarked, “This was a good cooperative effort with the Town of Murphy Police Department and our investigators. Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 8th, 2017 arrest of 25 year old Ethan Thomas Smith, 19 year old Jacob David Smith and 28 year old Clinton James Silvers all of Murphy, North Carolina. On June 08th, 2017 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a breaking and entering at a residence in Marble, North Carolina where, among other things, a firearm and checks were stolen from the residence. Later in the day, a deputy was assisting the North Carolina State Highway Patrol on a driver’s license checking station when a vehicle in which the Smiths and Silvers were occupying came through the checking station. The deputy knew that Ethan Smith had an active warrant. During a search of the vehicle, incident to arrest items reported stolen were recovered in the possession of the two Smith brothers, along with a quantity of marijuana seeds. During the search, a quantity of methamphetamine was also found in the possession of Silvers. Ethan Smith was charged with BREAKING AND OR ENTERING, LARCENY OF A FIREARM, BREAKING AND OR ENTERING, FELONY POSSESSION MARIJUANA, POSSESS MARIJUANA PARAPHERNALIA, SECOND DEGREE TRESPASS, INJURY TO PERSONAL PROPERTY. Ethan Smith is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $12,000.00 secure bond and has a June 27th, 2017 District Court date. Jacob Smith was charged with BREAKING AND OR ENTERING, LARCENY OF A FIREARM, BREAKING AND OR ENTERING, SECOND DEGREE TRESPASS, INJURY TO PERSONAL PROPERTY. Jacob Smith is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $9,500.00 secure bond and has a June 27th, 2017 District Court date. Clinton Silvers was charged with POSSESS METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESS MARIJUANA GREATER THAN 1/2 OZ TO 1 1/2 OZ. Clinton Silvers is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $4,000.00 secure bond and has a June 27th, 2017 District Court date. Nearly sixty players loaded into their golf carts in the crisp early-morning air, eager to begin their round of golf under a clear blue sky during the Tri-County Community College Foundation’s 9th Annual Golf Tournament at The Ridges Country Club in Hayesville on May 20. “I am extremely excited to see everyone turn out year after year for this event,” said Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers, president of Tri-County Community College, as she addressed the crowd. “It’s a great day to have fun, but most importantly, your contributions will be benefitting our students, which is really what this event is all about,” she said. CULLOWHEE – Ivy Demetria Gibson, senior strategic business partner in human resources at Mission Health in Asheville, has been named assistant general counsel and chief compliance officer at Western Carolina University, effective June 1.
Gibson, a resident of Franklin, is filling a vacancy created when J. Wesley Chancey, WCU’s inaugural compliance officer, became associate general counsel and Title IX coordinator for the university in April. In her new role, Gibson will be responsible for ensuring that WCU remains in accordance with the hundreds of federal, state and University of North Carolina system laws, regulations and policies with which the university must comply, said Shea Browning, WCU’s general counsel. “Ivy comes to us with unique regulatory and legal experience in multiple sectors, including health care and energy,” Browning said. “I am confident that her skill set will complement and enhance the coverage of the Legal Counsel Office. We are excited that she is joining our team.” In her work at Mission Health, Gibson has been responsible for developing and interpreting a wide variety of polices to ensure legal and regulatory compliance, including matters related to the federal Health Information and Portability and Accountability Act, accreditation standards, drug diversion, reasonable accommodations, harassment and discrimination. Prior to joining Mission Health in 2016, she was a staff attorney with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., and served as a legal intern in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs. Gibson earned her law degree at the Catholic University of America in 2013 after receiving her bachelor’s degree in international studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009. Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the May 25th, 2017 arrest of 48-year-old Steven Darren Stewart, of Hayesville, North Carolina and 33-year-old Lucius Cain Day, of Andrews, North Carolina, for violations of the controlled substances laws of North Carolina. On or about May 25th, 2017 during the early evening hours, a vehicle in which Day and Stewart were occupying was observed driving erratically on Long Branch Road in the Marble Community of Cherokee County. A deputy made a stop of the vehicle to investigate the condition of the driver. While continuing his investigation, the deputy was given permission to conduct a search of the vehicle by the owner. While attempting to complete a search of the vehicle, Day attempted to flee from the scene. After being detained, a search was completed and approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine along with a small quantity of marijuana and paraphernalia, including scales, were seized. Both Day and Stewart were arrested on scene and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center. Stewart was charged with PWIMSD METHAMPHETAMINE, RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA and placed on a $2,000.00 secured bond which he posted the same night. Day was also charged with POSSESS METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESS MARIJUANA PARAPHERNALIA, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA $2,000.00 unsecured bond. Both Day and Stewart are expected in Cherokee County District Court on June 26th, 2017. On June 1st 2017, the Murphy Police Department arrested Leon Dockery of Cherokee County, NC for Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Maintain and Dwell, Felony Possession of Marijuana, Possession with intent to manufacture/ sell/ deliver Marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation is still ongoing at this time. Officers with Probation and Parole, along with the assistance of Murphy Police Department were conducting a probation check on Leon Dockery when a substantial amount of marijuana and methamphetamine were located at the residence. Mr. Dockery is currently being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $10,000 secure bond. On June 1st 2017, the Murphy Police Department along with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office arrested Mark Newlyn Patterson of Graham County, NC for Cyber Stalking. The Murphy Police Department along with the assistance of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Department of Probation and Parole have been investigating multiple criminal acts of lewd and lascivious acts by Patterson since 5/11/2017 that may have taken place in the Konehete Park in Murphy. This investigation is ongoing at this time. Until this point, no one was able to identify the suspect or willing to follow through with charging the suspect. Officers were able to identify the suspect as Mark Newlyn Patterson. Through the cooperation of the general public and social media, arrest warrant for Patterson where taken out on 06/01/2017 for cyber stalking. We encourage the public if you have been a victim of a crime from Mark Newlyn Patterson to please come forward and report it to the appropriate law enforcement agency. If the crime took place in the city limits of Murphy please report it to the Murphy Police Department, If the crime took place outside the city limits of Murphy, you can report the crime to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
