The 2016 ceremony, led by TCCC faculty members Butch Freeman and Amy Johnson, will focus on the “Power of One.” “We’ll be discussing how even just one person or one vote can influence an entire democracy, both in the past and looking ahead for future generations to come,” said Freeman, who teaches history classes at TCCC. “It’s a topic Amy and I feel is more important than ever.” According to Freeman, the ceremony will touch on cornerstones of the founding of the United States, through the appointment of the first woman to the Supreme Court, and into the current ways one vote or individual can shape democracy in the United States. The event will be free and open to the public. Due to the large attendance at the 2015 ceremony, TCCC is offering a morning session beginning at 10 a.m. and a repeat afternoon session at 1 p.m. for anyone interested in attending. On Sunday morning, September 11, 2016 deputies with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office responded to two business burglaries. The businesses were identified as Cornerstone BP, located on Highway 76, and the Sunoco, located on Highway 17. Both businesses were located in Young Harris. Both businesses were entered by cutting and knocking a hole in the outside wall of the businesses. Towns County Sheriff's Investigators believe these two burglaries are related. Investigators further believe these two burglaries to be related to several other recent burglaries reported in several surrounding counties over the last several months, being perpetrated by a crew of professional burglars. Due to the multi-jurisdictional nature of these crimes, Towns County Sheriff's Office has reached out to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, who are already assisting in the other burglaries. Towns County Sheriff's Office has developed potential leads in the case and has recovered forensic evidence that we believe will be beneficial in solving this case. According to Sheriff Clinton, Towns County Sheriff's Office will be taking an active role in identifying and bringing these burglars to justice. "We will be sharing information with other agencies that have had burglaries committed by these criminals. These are professional burglars. We don't typically deal with that type of crime here in Towns County, but we are fortunate to have detectives who have dealt with these types of cases in the past and we will do all that we can to bring these criminals to justice." These investigations are active and ongoing at this time. Anyone with information as to the suspects are asked to call Lt. Mark Cecci with the Towns County Sheriff's Office at 706-896-4444. |
